Compassionate and Professional Therapy for all ages – Children, Adolescents, Adults & Couples! *IMMEDIATE AVAILABILITY!*
Choosing a psychologist is an important decision. You may notice that psychologists have different registration titles, qualifications, areas of interest and levels of experience.
Understanding what these titles mean can help you make an informed decision about your care.
At Calm Space Psychology Services, we carefully match each client with the psychologist who is most appropriate for their individual needs.
There is no single "best" psychologist for everyone. The most appropriate clinician depends on your individual circumstances, goals and preferences.
When recommending a clinician, we consider factors such as:
your presenting concerns
your goals for therapy or assessment
your age and stage of life
areas of interest and experience
any additional training relevant to your needs
appointment availability
your preferences, where possible.
If we believe another clinician within our team would be more appropriate for your care, we will discuss this with you and support a smooth transition.
Psychologists in Australia are regulated by the Psychology Board of Australia and registered through the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
All psychologists are required to practise ethically, maintain professional standards, undertake ongoing professional development, and work within their scope of practice.
Some psychologists also complete additional approved training to gain an area of endorsement (e.g., Clinical, Counselling Psychology).
Registration title is one factor to consider when choosing a psychologist, but it does not, on its own, determine who is the most appropriate clinician for your needs.
A Provisional Psychologist is registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and is completing a period of supervised practice as part of the pathway towards general registration as a psychologist.
Before becoming provisionally registered, psychologists complete accredited university education and meet the registration requirements of the Psychology Board of Australia.
During this stage of their career, they continue developing their knowledge and clinical skills while working within their scope of practice and receiving structured supervision.
At Calm Space Psychology Services, our Provisional Psychologists practise within a structured clinical governance framework. In addition to receiving regular supervision from a Board-approved supervisor, they have ongoing opportunities for clinical consultation and case discussion with experienced psychologists within our practice. They also participate in continuing professional development to support their ongoing development.
Individual clinicians may also bring experience from previous roles in fields such as education, counselling, disability services or community health. This is in addition to their psychology training and supervised practice.
Every generally registered psychologist has completed a period of provisional registration as part of their professional pathway. Supervised practice is an established and important stage of psychologist training in Australia.
A Psychologist has met the requirements for general registration with AHPRA and practises independently within their scope of practice.
Registered Psychologists are required to maintain their registration, complete continuing professional development each year, and comply with the professional, ethical and legal standards established by the Psychology Board of Australia.
Depending on their areas of interest, experience and work setting, Registered Psychologists may provide assessment and psychological treatment for children, adolescents and adults across a broad range of presenting concerns.
Some psychologists choose to complete additional approved postgraduate training and supervised practice in a recognised area of psychology. Once these requirements have been met, they may apply for an area of endorsement with the Psychology Board of Australia. An area of endorsement recognises additional qualifications in a particular area of psychology.
A Clinical Psychologist is a psychologist with an area of endorsement in Clinical Psychology and commonly works with the assessment and psychological treatment of a broad range of mental health concerns across the lifespan, depending on their areas of interest, experience and scope of practice.
A Counselling Psychologist is a psychologist with an area of endorsement in Counselling Psychology and commonly works with people experiencing concerns such as anxiety, depression, grief and loss, relationship difficulties, life transitions and other mental health concerns, depending on their areas of interest, experience and scope of practice.
The most appropriate clinician depends on your individual needs rather than a registration title alone.
Some people prefer a clinician with experience working with a particular age group or presenting concern. Others may prefer a specific therapeutic approach or appointment availability.

Supervised practice is an established part of psychologist training in Australia. It provides opportunities for ongoing learning, professional development and reflective practice while psychologists work towards general registration.
That's completely understandable. Choosing a psychologist can feel overwhelming, particularly if you're seeking support for the first time.
Our team can discuss your needs, answer your questions and help you find the clinician who is most appropriate for your goals and preferences.
